OfflineI might rip off that "Shane Black Christmas" idea on CHUD and watch a few of those. Long Kiss Goodnight and Lethal Weapon are obviously great, but I can't remember if the equally great Last Boy Scout took place on Xmas or not.
Unlike everyone else, I actually enjoy Jingle All the Way. It's endlessly fun and watchable, but then again I'm a sucker for the throwback structure of those 80s "wild night" movies even though it takes place in the day. And I love the way the script keeps escalating up until the bugnuts finale, where it basically goes into sci-fi territory with no explanation.
And you know what's actually good and I'm totally not being sarcastic? Fred Claus. I know it doesn't look that good and you have to enjoy Vince Vaughn's schtick or you will hate it. But it's funny and sweet, Kevin Spacey is a complex, layered villain, and I still love how Rachel Weisz followed up her Oscar-winning turn in The Constant Gardener by being Vince Vaughn's love interest in a kid's movie.
And it's from Joel Silver too! If only Fred Claus made a pit stop delivering toys to the good children of Val Verde, this would be a perfect movie.
Thanks for the suggestions. While I like KISS KISS BANG BANG it's a little darker than I'd like particularly with the change I decided to make. Already watched all four LETHALs recently as part of my series quest so I'm making a minor addition but otherwise sticking to the classics, but remembering to track down JINGLE ALL THE WAY in time for next year.
Like the LETHALs I watched all four SCREAMs recently so as a non-Christmas warm-up and appetizer to the addition to the list I'm watching SCARY MOVIE first then
SANTA'S SLAY (based on Vern's review since I've never seen it and sandwiching it between two straight non-Christmas comedies)
PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES
HOME ALONE
SCROOGED (to end right at midnight leading to early morning viewing of…)
DIE HARD
It's always funny to see the site CHUD mentioned neal2zod, since the brilliant pile of shit C.H.U.D. has one of my most listened-to commentaries. I'll have to look for FRED CLAUS as well, my budget for buying new movies was a bit restrained this year.
