Pixar's Wreck-It Ralph | THE FILMS OF CINEMA | Forum

Well, for what it's worth, I've seen it and I thought it was kind of bland.
I mean, visually it's very nice, with a bunch of cute ideas (like, the old videogame characters look like modern CGI characters BUT their animation is all choppy), and it's entertaining enough. But the plot is not exactly compelling, most of the jokes are not really jokes, they're just "hey look, it's Zangief, it's funny to see him in a movie about a fictional videogame character because he's from a real life videogame! Oh look, Q*Bert, that's another character from a real life videogame! Funny!", and it doesn't have much soul.
It's kind of like Poor Despicable Me meets Toy Story, but not as good as either (and I didn't even think Poor Despicable Me was very good in the first place), and you know from the beginning that the whole point is to teach you a valuable lesson that you've already heard a million times, either "You can always change, no matter what society says, you can be anything you want to be!" or "You should accept yourself just the way you are because we all have our part to play in the grand scheme of things" (they go with the latter) (SPOILER I guess), but the whole setting doesn't make ot very relatable. Ralph is not actually a bad guy who learns to be good (like, say, the bad guy in Megamind), he's a nice guy whose job is to play the part of the bad guy in a fictional story. So you don't really get why the other characters still treat him as a bad person in the first place, and why he really wants acceptance from such assholes (Q*Bert is obviously more enlightened, he hangs out with the snake and the green blob guy, why doesn't Ralph hang out with Q*Bert? Is it because he's not cool enough because he's unemployed now? Then that makes Ralph an asshole too), and you know that the way he chooses to prove that he's nice (beating another videogame to steal the reward at the end) is retarded. I guess the authors put less thought into that than into "what recognizable characters can we include in this without having to pay too much to their owners?"
Anyway. It's pretty. It's not boring. So at least there's that.
