trailer for FALCON RISING starring MJW

We finally have a new Michael Jai White vehicle on the way, and here’s the trailer.

Falcon Rising – Trailer from Moonstone Entertainment on Vimeo.

Somehow MJW hasn’t had an action movie role since 2011 (when he co-starred in TACTICAL FORCE and NEVER BACK DOWN 2), and he hasn’t had a starring action role since his DTV classic BLOOD AND BONE in 2009. The producers of FALCON RISING recognize this problem so they are pre-planning this as a franchise. If they stick to the plan then White’s character John “Falcon” Chapman will doing flying kicks on motherfuckers in different exotic locations each year. This is of course the Brazil chapter.

It looks like Neal McDonough plays his boss, and his sister (who gets kidnapped, I think) is played by Muhammad Ali’s daughter Laila. Not surprisingly considering the setting, Lateef Crowder (capoeira fighter who’s in THE PROTECTOR and UNDISPUTED III) is also in it. Larnell Stovall (UNDISPUTED III, NEVER BACK DOWN 2, UNIVERSAL SOLDIER: DAY OF RECKONING) choreographed the fights. At one point I read that Isaac Florentine (where are you, man?) was gonna direct this, but it ended up being Ernie Barbarash. Not as much of a sure bet, but I remember thinking his Van Damme/Adkins team-up ASSASSINATION GAMES was pretty decent.

Allegedly this will have a theatrical release September 5th, but I’ll believe it when I see it.

  1. Consider me Michael Jai Psyched. As a Brazilianist I was about to go ‘oh good, more Favelas’ but the Yakuza angle shows that someone did more than 30 seconds (less than a year) of research.

Anyone else annoyed by the constant black bars moving in and out of the screen, obscuring the image? Seems like someone discovered a cool new trick in their video editing software.

Fighting bits look good though, especially that last kick. Made me smile. Hope this does turn into a franchise with yearly installments, but it seems the DTV market is too fragile for that. Look at how long it’s taking for Boyka to get the green light.

  3. Yeah those black bars are annoying, hopefully the actual movie doesn’t indulge in that Windows Movie Maker-looking nonsense. Otherwise, a Michael Jai White action movie with fights by Larnell Stovall means I’m in. I like Neal McDonough too, though I prefer it when he’s acting totally unhinged.

  4. Hmmm. Can’t help but see McDonough as the secret bad guy.

  5. i recently watched blood and bone due to your glowing review and fucking loved it. truly MJW is a king amongst men

  6. Still have to see NBD 2 but more MJW vehicles are certainly not a bad thing.

And the video doesn’t load. Fuck.

Randy – “Blood and Bone” is awesome. Still one of the greatest finds I’ve had from recommendations on this site.

Well the fact that the favela themed movie is going to have the fucking Yakuza as the main antagonists is a really cool twist.

  9. Yes. My man Lateef is the icing on the cake here. I promise to see this in th theater should the stars align.

  10. I’ll never forgive the world for not giving us a BLOOD AND BONE 2, but this might soften the blow (or spin kick to the chest). Does anyone else think the screen shot from the video looks like they’re caught in the middle of a dance off?

  11. So Vern, we’re not counting Michael Jai White’s foray into The Asylum with ANDROID COP earlier this year? Maybe it’s for the best, that didn’t look all that hot.

I too thought ASSASSINATION GAMES was pretty good, but his followup 6 BULLETS was disappointingly generic and maybe the most emblematic of Van Damme’s “sad sack” phase. The future is looking good for Barbarash though, between FALCON RISING and the just-wrapped POUND OF FLESH(again, with Van Damme). Apparently Donnie Yen’s longtime buddy and collaborator John Salvitti choreographed the fights in that one.

  12. Zeke – MJW recently said on Twitter or somewhere that they’re going to do a sequel to BLOOD AND BONE, but I’ll believe it when I see it.

  13. I only didn’t count ANDROID COP because it hasn’t come out on video yet. Was it already on VOD or something? I will give it a shot.

  14. ANDROID COP is on telly over here tonight. Not at all promising, really…

  15. ANDROID COP has been out on Blu-ray and DVD since February, I believe. I seem to recall spotting in my local Redbox kiosk around that time but didn’t have the heart to rent it when i noticed it was an Asylum release.

  16. Looks like Seattle lucks out again, Vern. According to its Facebook page, FALCON RISING will be playing at the Sundance Cinema in your town. Hopefully, you’ll be able to do a review.

  17. Ooh, thanks for the tip. I was trying to get a screener but if it’s playing in a theater I gotta do that. I actually haven’t gone to that one since it was made over into a fancy dine in theater.
